Clifton College Cricket embodies a holistic approach to cricket, balancing both participation and performance to foster a culture of excellence and inclusivity.
Henry Newbolt – ‘There’s a breathless hush in the Close-to-night, Ten to make and the match to win‘ – wrote these lines in 1892 about cricket on Clifton’s Close, making the ground a location famous throughout the world. Seven years after the poem was written A.E.J. Collins scored 628 not out in a house match which remains the highest score recorded in England.
The cricket programme prides itself on nurturing young talent while instilling values of teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.
At Clifton, participation is key, with opportunities for students of all skill levels to engage in cricket. From recreational matches to competitive fixtures, every student is encouraged to develop their passion for the game. This inclusive ethos not only promotes physical wellbeing but also cultivates a sense of belonging within the school community.
However, alongside this emphasis on participation, Clifton College Cricket maintains a strong focus on performance. Talented individuals are identified and provided with specialised coaching and support to reach their full potential. The programme’s dedicated coaching staff, many of whom have experience at professional levels, ensure that aspiring cricketers receive the guidance they need to excel.
During my 5 years at Clifton College, playing cricket has been the highlight. Whether it’s playing away in the national t20 tournaments, going on tour to South Africa or playing cricket on The Close, I enjoyed the journey. High quality cricket is the second best element of cricket at Clifton College after the environment and the vibe of the team.
