Halbie’s successful road to Wimbledon
Cilfton College pupil Halbie continued his Road to Wimbledon success over the weekend. Thank you to the Prep School who allowed him to compete by missing an A team cricket match.
Halbie won both his games on Saturday; 4-2 down he won the first set 6-4. Then lost the second 6-3 having been 3-3. It then went down to a championship tiebreak and Halbie was losing 4-1, but fought back and won 10-7!
He then played an epic final on Sunday beating winners from other schools and clubs. He managed to beat his opponent, who was twice his height and had a powerful forehand and serve, by clever tactics and perseverance – qualifying him for the Avon final at Wimbledon from 8th-14th August,
Halbie said, “I am excited about the fantastic opportunity of playing at Wimbledon but I’m also nervous because I want to do my best.”
Andrew Wagstaff, Director of Sport, said “I am very proud that he will have the opportunity to represent Avon and play on the courts of Wimbledon – Good luck Halbie!”
