Curriculum Covered in the Reception Year

The Reception children cover a rich and diverse curriculum, providing awe and wonder to each individual. How children learn is just as important as what they learn and we always seek for children to take an active interest in their own learning. We follow the children’s interests to promote and extend learning opportunities, as we acknowledge that children take ownership of their learning and make effective progress when they are excited and stimulated to learn.

We believe that children learn best when they are motivated through playing and exploring, participating in active learning, creating and thinking critically. Therefore our curriculum is delivered through a mixture of play experiences and adult-led activities that follow the children’s curiosity.

Our framework is divided into three prime areas and four specific areas of learning. The prime areas consist of; communication and language development; physical development; personal, social and emotional development. And the specific areas are made up of; literacy development, mathematics, understanding the world, expressive arts and design.

Alongside the set curriculum we offer, we are continuously preparing children for life outside of the classroom. We focus on developing skills to set them up for success in society, including sharing, respect for others, learning about consent, insight into digital knowledge and technology among many more. We strive to ensure that our Reception children’s introduction into education is happy, active, exciting and secure, whilst simultaneously supporting their development, care and learning needs.

What access is there to the wider Clifton College provision?

The Reception children have use of all of the fantastic facilities that Clifton College has to offer. We are proud to offer a weekly 30 minute swimming lesson with a specialist teacher at our on site pool. We also provide children with a specialist French lesson once a week along with weekly library sessions where they can change, borrow and read a selection of age appropriate books.

Other opportunities to explore the wider College provision include; visits to the College Chapel; shows at the Redgrave Theatre; several music sessions per week with our specialist music teacher; a weekly indoor gym lesson in the Bretton Memorial Hall; and not forgetting regular sessions at our award-winning Forest School located at our Beggar Bush site.

Forest School is a particular favourite with the children and adults alike. Our outdoor classroom area at Beggar Bush is a safe and controlled space for children to begin to explore their natural environment. Here they can focus on important skills such as establishing an appreciation of our world, developing self-confidence and self-esteem, turn-taking and listening. Our very own dedicated Forest School Leader conducts sessions to engage the children in all sorts of activities outside the constraints of the classroom.

Through the combination of exceptional staff, amazing resources and an inspiring environment, Clifton College has truly created a unique opportunity for children to thrive, both here and beyond.
