Clifton College Hosts the Inaugural Bristol Young City Poet Competition

We were thrilled to host the inaugural Young City Poet competition this week, organised by LYRA.

The event involves workshops available to secondary schools and community groups based anywhere in Bristol, aimed at young people aged 14-17 (school years 10-12).

LYRA’s workshops aim to engage young people with self-expression, public speaking and self-empowerment through the medium of spoken word and poetry, inviting participants to write about what Bristol means to them – its people, places, history, etc.

The Young City Poet project is connected to the Bristol 650 celebrations, marking the 650th anniversary of Bristol becoming an independent county (and city).

Well done to each and every individual who performed their poem, we were blown away by the talent we saw!

And a big thank you to Caleb Parkin (Bristol City Poet 2020-2022), and Vanessa Kisuule (Bristol City Poet 2018-20), for inspiring all the budding poets through editing and performance workshops.

Our three Clifton finalists’ incredible poems can be accessed below.
