Ryan Bresnahan Girls Hockey Memorial Match 2025
On Thursday 13th February, Clifton College Girls 1st XI welcomed Millfield School to the Chellaram Sports Complex for the Ryan Bresnahan memorial match. It was a must win game for the Clifton College 1st XI, in order to book them a place in the national quarter finals. With a narrow defeat a week prior to the fixture in the independent schools cup against Millfiled, the team were looking to better their performance and come out with the win.
The team started well, winning an early short corner and immediately putting the Millfield defence under pressure. The girls had some lovely passages of play, passing the ball round nicely and threatening the Millfield circle. Emilia P. played a lovely crash ball across the circle to find Eloise M. on the deflection, narrowly missing the target. The Clifton defence, led by captain Sophie H. dealt with pressure from Millfield well and Katie H. made some important saves to keep the scores level going into the break.
Clifton removed their goalkeeper with 10 mins to play, to try and break the deadlock with an extra outfielder on the pitch. Unfortunately, Millfield broke away and were able to capitalise to make it 1-0. Soon after, Clifton broke forward and Evie G. scored a reverse stick shot to bring the scores level. Clifton kept threatening the Millfield net and won a couple more penalty corners. They were unable to find the second and the match finished with a respectable 1-1 draw.
It was a very competitive game, played in great spirits and it was an amazing advert for girls’ sport at the college. It was a pleasure to welcome so many spectators to the game, all of which was played in the memory of Ryan. Thank you to everyone that came to watch and support the match.
