The Art Department teaches a wide range of disciplines and encourages pupils to explore a variety of approaches.
We hope to encourage a lifelong appreciation of art, and the inspiration and encouragement for pupils to participate and create artworks of their own.
Teaching
We give our painting and drawing pupils a thorough grounding in draughtsmanship, oil painting, composition and colour theory. Sculpture pupils are taught hand-built ceramic techniques, coiling, slab building, sculpting and slip casting. Our photography pupils are taught camera, lighting, darkroom and digital techniques. This allows them to grasp the basic technical skills before going on to develop their individual styles.
Our pupils are encouraged to work across a range of media. We are fortunate to count among our teaching staff a fine art painter and printmaker, a fine art painter and textiles artist, a ceramicist, a sculptor, an art historian and a photographer.
Why study at Clifton College?
Clifton College students have won a number of competitions in fine art and photography, including the Senior Schools’ Art Competition in Bristol, which we have won six times in the nine years it has been held.
We organise regular study trips to art galleries and other venues in Bristol and London. In the past, we have also taken Sixth Form students to Florence, Rome, Venice, Saint Petersburg, Moscow and Paris.
